Selenite and Satin Spar are both forms of the mineral Gypsum, but they have distinctly different appearances. True Selenite forms in transparent to translucent crystals with a clearer, glass-like structure, while Satin Spar has the familiar fibrous, silky white appearance often sold under the Selenite name.

Selenite commonly forms as mineral-rich water evaporates, allowing Gypsum to crystallise into its characteristic transparent or translucent structures.
